Enemy At the Gates
Watch the following 4 clips from the movie Enemy At the Gates. It is about the Battle of Stalingrad in the Soviet Union during World War II.
Clip #1 - Crossing the Volga
Here we see the Red Army ferried across the Volga River to the devastated ruins of Stalingrad. Pay attention to the treatment of the Soviet soldiers by their own officers.
Clip #2 - Battle of Stalingrad
Here we see a poorly planned (and executed) charge by the Soviets against the entrenched Nazi Army. (I mean, how on Earth can you be successful in such a battle when you have a handful of bullets... and no gun?!) As with Clip #1, pay attention to what happens to those Soviets that retreat. (Is there any wonder their casualties were astronomically ridiculous during World War II?)
Clip #3 - Sniper Time!
Here we see Vasily Zaytsev (played by Jude Law) answer his comrade's question of "Do you know how to shoot?" by putting on a spectacular display of his skills. Remember, this is a true story about how Vasily came to be known as "The Hero of Stalingrad"... by killing 225 Nazi soldiers/officers and 11 Nazi snipers in and around the city in 1942.
Clip #4 - Nikita Khrushchev
Ruh-roh. Following their bad "outing" against the Nazis (and despite Vasily's heroics), Nikita Khruschev shows up to take control of the situation.
