Science teachers Mr. Doug Wynn and Mr. Dave Weaner "play" with a couple of snakes in this picture from 1978. [Click picture for a larger version.]
Picture
In 1986, a snake ate two Freshmen at WNHS. OK, so it never got that bad, but it was during that fabled year that "Bambi" the Science Department's snake got loose. The 12-foot python escaped from her cage, moved across the lab's counter... and went up into the ceiling. Luckily, the snake was scaling, otherwise (to quote science teacher Mr. Doug Wynn) "we would not have been able to track her down." In this picture, Mr. Wynn is interviewed by Carol Rapp, a reporter from Channel 6 WTVN. For several days, members of the Science Department searched the building for Bambi, while some horrified students elected to stay home in fear of a python dropping from the ceiling. Mr. Irv Christenson crawled across I-beams, following the scales. He located the snake, curled up and hiding near some insulation. A few days after Bambi's return, she took a trip to a local bar in Columbus called Rocky's. "We always want to educate people, and they can learn anywhere, even in a bar," Wynn said. Curt Jackowski served as Principal of WNHS from 2003-2007. He passed away from cancer in 2014. And while his tenure at North was brief, he touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. He certainly is missed around the halls of North. [Click picture for a larger version.]

Former Principal Curt Jackowski's legacy lives on in the "Throwdown Across Maxtown" Memorial Trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Westerville North-Westerville Central football game. In the picture above, Curt's son, Nate, who played for Central, is shown holding the trophy after Central won the inaugural game by defeating North 39-17 on October 9, 2014. It was former Principal Curt Jackowski's idea to install the giant Warrior logo in the Main Lobby, and he encouraged students to never step on it. On May 14, 2015, a plaque was installed on the wall directly behind the logo so Curt can continue to watch over the Warriors. [Click picture for a larger version.]
