What movies will we watch in here?
It's a question that Dr. Hartnell gets asked 28 times on the first day of class. And why not?! It's an honest question, especially when asked by 15-year-olds. So, here's the answer:
Throughout Dr. Hartnell's courses, students will be given an opportunity to view historical blockbusters in their entirety or as a series of "clips". These movies are all critically acclaimed and will be shown in their original theatrical format. They were selected because of their impact on culture/society and for their portrayal of the historical event at hand.
However, Hollywood does take liberties with certain events as it attempts to shorten "history" down to two or three hours. Because of this, students will use the information learned in class and gained from their readings in order to question, critique, and/or compliment Hollywood's version of history. Discussion occurs before, during, and after each film in the form of Dr. Hartnell's "History vs. Hollywood" Socratic Seminars. In short, these movies are NOT shown to "waste time" or as a "free day".
Some of the films/clips shown are rated "R" for violence, brief nudity, and adult language. In order to view these films, students will need to get permission from their parents/guardians. In the case that parents/guardians would rather students not see a particular movie (no questions asked), s/he will NOT be "punished" with an alternative assignment. Instead, a summary of the film will be provided, and the student will be exempt from any questions on assessments pertaining to the movie.
For a list of the movies shown in any of Dr. Hartnell's courses, please scroll further down this page. Understand that not all of the movies on this list are shown in every class. Look for the student's specific class (e.g., AH1, Honors) before making a decision. A brief summary of each film is provided, along with its MPAA rating and the corresponding unit in which it will be shown.

Movie Viewing Permission:
Students will need to secure permission from their parent/guardian in order to watch clips and full films. This movie "permission slip" can be found inside the Admissions Packet. Students were each given a copy of it on the first day of class, but another can be downloaded here.
Dr. Hartnell's Movie List:Please take some time to read the summaries of the movies listed below, AND, more importantly, how they are being used in Dr. Hartnell's class. Clearly, students are not watching all of these films in their entirety; most are used only for clips.
