-------------------------------------
To my students,
It is with great sadness that I have to take some time away from school to tend to my grieving family. My father suffered a stroke last Friday evening and spent the weekend in the ICU before passing away yesterday. Coming to school on Monday and Tuesday provided a necessary distraction from the chaos at home. Much in the same way I hope my classroom can shelter you from “life” for 47 minutes a day, I turned to you to do the same for me those two days, and you did not disappoint. Life is rough. Life is messy. Life can seem unfair at times. But when you pull back from a sorrowful situation, you can still see that life is good. I was blessed to have my father for 40 years. I am the person I am today because of him. His death, while difficult to bear, is part of the larger tapestry of our existence. (It’s part of that “story” I keep yammering on about!) While I am saddened, I am reminded of all the good he did for others. His life was a life well-lived. I love my job, I love this school, and I love having the opportunity to work with each and every one of you. We’ve had a great first four days of school, which is why it is tough to have to be away until Tuesday, September 4th. I know we were just getting started understanding the dynamics of this class. The sub will give you a schedule of what you should be doing in class until my return. Please be respectful of the sub and your fellow students. Your behavior is not something I have the energy to worry about, so I ask that you PLEASE behave in the manner in which I know you know how to behave. A good sub report is the best gift you can give me at this time. Thank you for your understanding. I’ll see you soon!
Humbly,
Dr. Hartnell

WEDNESDAY, August 22nd:

Using your own devices (or the Chromebooks), answer the following five questions on a sheet of notebook paper (don’t forget to put both names on the notebook paper and turn it in to the sub when you’re done).
Today’s “problem”: #10 – Lack of economic opportunity and employment.
Key questions:
1. Define the problem. What does it mean?
2. Where in the world is this problem the greatest?
3. Where in the world is this problem not really a problem?
