To my students,
It is with great sadness that I have to take some time away from school to tend to my grieving family. My father suffered a stroke last Friday evening and spent the weekend in the ICU before passing away yesterday. Coming to school on Monday and Tuesday provided a necessary distraction from the chaos at home. Much in the same way I hope my classroom can shelter you from “life” for 47 minutes a day, I turned to you to do the same for me those two days, and you did not disappoint. Life is rough. Life is messy. Life can seem unfair at times. But when you pull back from a sorrowful situation, you can still see that life is good. I was blessed to have my father for 40 years. I am the person I am today because of him. His death, while difficult to bear, is part of the larger tapestry of our existence. (It’s part of that “story” I keep yammering on about!) While I am saddened, I am reminded of all the good he did for others. His life was a life well-lived. I love my job, I love this school, and I love having the opportunity to work with each and every one of you. We’ve had a great first four days of school, which is why it is tough to have to be away until Tuesday, September 4th. I know we were just getting started learning how to take notes and understanding the dynamics of this class. To help with my absence, I have printed off all of the notes we would have written down in your spiral notebooks. The sub will give you a schedule of what you should be doing in class until my return. It’s not the most exhilarating stuff to work on, but I’m asking that you do your best to power through it. I’ll be sure to recap this material and answer any questions you have. Please be respectful of the sub and your fellow students. Your behavior is not something I have the energy to worry about, so I ask that you PLEASE behave in the manner in which I know you know how to behave. A good sub report is the best gift you can give me at this time. Thank you for your understanding. I’ll see you soon!
Humbly,
Dr. Hartnell
